Fridays are for fishing- Part one

paperclip

Friday I went fishing with Billy and Luke. Billy was turning ten the next day, and next to Lego’s fishing is Bill's great love. Luke would have prefered to be driven to a Lego store. Luke has never caught a fish. But, he loves his brother and was willing to support Billy's birthday wish. We loaded the car with rubber boots, sweat shirts, hats, water and a large ice chest. We turned off the freeway in Petaluma and drove west towards Bodega Bay. I love Billy and Luke and like to spend time with them. I don’t ever get to see Parker and Lexi. Just before Bodega we turned up a dirt road following signs to Hargfarmers fishing farm. I was told that this is the place to take little guys who have never caught a fish and don’t know how to set a hook. The lady who took my money guaranteed me everyone would go home happy.

I got the boys poles and worms. Ahead of us two men and a boy marched off towards the little lake, settling on the dry grass that stretched down the hill to the lake. They were on the north side of the lake with the sun in front of them. I chose the same side, but walked the boys to a calm part of the lake under some shady Eucalyptus trees. I grew up fishing. But, I have never enjoyed it. I am not a patient guy. My mind moves at about 125 miles an hour. Fishing moves at about -5 miles an hour. Unless, you are trying to out think a fish which moves it up to 25 miles and hour. You only get to my 125 when a fish is on the line.

In the hot sun, I have noticed that trout prefer to laze near the banks in the shadows. Less sun and they will move more to the middle in the current. Small boys are not big casters. The shadows under the trees seemed perfect. These boys weren’t that excited about putting squiggling worms on hooks. Neither was I. I prefer fly’s and lures. I hate eggs, worms, nymphing etc. The boys cast in and we sat and waited, and waited, and waited. That is fishing. Luke was through after the first five minutes. I tried explaining to him that throwing rocks, sticks, worms, etc. in the water where we were fishing, was not helpful. His big brother was getting annoyed.
