Here is my prediction. Spain, Chile and Italy are out. This summer, the new hot grape is Verdehlo. Verdehlo is a Portuguese grape recently planted in California. It is so new that there are very few wine writers, winemakers, sommeliers, wine bar owners or wine lovers who have ever tasted a California Verdehlo. There are only a handful of companies that make it. Which is why it is interesting. If you are bored with Chardonnay and tired of Sauvignon Blanc, try Verdehlo. Or try our Civello which is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Verdehlo. It is fragrant, refreshing and fun. What makes Verdhelo so cool? Besides the fact that it is so hard to find, it is the only wine that truly goes with our spiciest summer things like guacamole and chips. Think Portugal with a California twist. How about this for a Portuguese summer feast? Lemon-mint chicken soup, smoked sausages with cilantro and clams, orange cake made with fresh California oranges, and of course Civello.
