Hawaii Part Two

It is hard pouring wines in a new state. No one knows who you are and frankly most people aren’t interested. To the distributor rep you are just a brand that is going to cost them more work. To the consumer you are new. Like a movie on a store shelf. They are interested but there are a lot of movies on the shelf, no one has ever heard of you, and no one has explained to them why they should take you home instead of say “Sleepless in Seattle” which they have already experienced a hundred times. I was thinking of that while I lay not so comfortably in the back seat of the small rental car.

Amy went to Pearl Harbor. We waited three hours before we could get in. I dreamed about the pool chair, the sound of the ocean, even the sound of the blender. Amy went to Waialua Bay. We waited in traffic for three hours. I dreamed about a cool glass of my Stratton Lummis Chardonnay with its peach flavors accompanying a delicate fish appetizer wrapped in banana leaves, and I thought about the pool chair and the sound of the ocean. Amy bought a hula girl that hulas when you put her on your dash board. We watched people chasing a guy who robbed a woman of her back pack. We drove across the island to see if there was water on the other side. We drove to the Pali so that Amy and Ratchet could peer over the cliff. I dreamed I was a Hawaiian prince with a coconut drink in my hand and a stick in the other which I used to indicate to my people that Amy and Ratchet should be pushed over the Pali while I listened to the ocean and lounged in my pool chair. I dreamed of dancing Mai-Tais, pork ribs, Civello, fish and chips, Blue Hawaiians, Kalua Pig, Vinas3 Pinot Noir and Huli Huli chicken.

Later, I was asleep, propped against the Moana Surfrider wall when Nurse Ratchet woke me up. If I lie down I can’t get up. I have to sleep sitting now. One of the little kids had put a flower on my sling. Cute. “It is time for you to get some exercise,” she said. She helped me to my feet. “Okay,” I said. “Let’s walk down to the Royal Hawaiian and get some Chinese food.” We didn’t walk far until we came to a Catamaran going out to sea. Amy Aiken was waving from the boat.
